Career Insights: Nurse Anesthetists now paid higher than Family Medicine Doctors

The 2023 average CRNA (What is a CRNA ?) salary in the USA, based on ZipRecruiter data compiled by Beckers Healthcare, is listed as $255,078 – the lowest in Florida ( around $185,000) and highest being New Jersey (around $285,000). A nurse anesthetist recently went viral explaining how she was able to pull in $500,000 annually by her late 20s as a nurse anesthetist. CNBC recently featured this 28 year old Anesthesia Assistant pulling more than $200,000 annually.

The 2023 average Family Medicine Doctor Salary in USA, based on ZipRecruiter data is listed as $208,152. A MedScape survey of 2022 MedScape Family Medicine survey data listed an average as $255,000. The same survey mentions how Family Med salaries have been affected by business taken away by the rise of Telemedicine, Retail Clinics and Nurse Practitioners.

While salary data can be skewed by the sample size and location of surveyed people, we look at general trends to analyze market changes. Procedures are reimbursed better than clinic medicine consults, while patients are also more willing to pay out of pocket for cosmetic plastic surgeries. Secondly, while the number of procedures a day can be increased over time with operational efficiencies, this is very tough to do with seeing more medically complex patients in a day in a Family Medicine clinic.

Also, the volume of surgeries has been steadily going up in the US & worldwide in both old & young people. The ageing popularion with an increasing lifespan has been driving up volume of elective surgeries such as knee & hip replacements. Also newer safer procedural treatment options are now available such as TAVR. While in the younger population, thanks to social media, cosmetic or aesthetic procedures are on the rise . Both these booming trends mean a good business future for Anesthesiologist Doctors, CRNAs & CAAs (Anesthesia Assistants). With hospitals and surgery centers looking to cut costs and increase profits, the demand for CRNAs continues to run higher than the more expensive Anesthesiologist physicians.
