Mild Cognitive Impairement can precede Dementia and can manifest in subtle signs that are often ascribed to ‘ageing’. At this early pre-Dementia stage , interventions such as engaging in a exercise program, group social activities, brain activities, DASH diet, improving sleep, tighter control of hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol, checking for B12, Folate, Thyroid deficiency, etc. and some medications can be more effective in delaying further worsening. Such interventions are less effective if diagnosis is delayed and Dementia progresses.
In these slides below, I discuss a simple mnemonic to remember the subtle early warning signs of Dementia, which you can ask the patient or their family when dementia is suspected (e.g. Hospital delirium in patients with no Dementia history)
